What's Wrong With American Formulas?

Parents will typically come across European formulas when they've hit a wall with their babies formula.  Some have chronically unhappy babies that are suffering from reflux, colic, diarrhea, constipation & allergies.  We were in this situation 5 years ago and there were no other options that worked for our infant along with our standards of formula.  There was no way we would give him Similac, but every Organic formula seemed to make him ill.  So we began the research process.  American formula companies love to test out their formulas on your children to see what works & what doesn't.  Formulas in the USA are all about the right advertising.  Companies will put remarks all over the packaging talking about why all these extra ingredients will benefit your baby.  When really it is one big marketing scam.

What's In American Formula's?

More and more parents are becoming educated about what's in their food as GMO's acts have been hitting the walls in the country.  However, we go beyond the GMO's in this blog and talk about other ingredients that can be found in many popular American formulas.

Corn Syrup:  Corn syrup is what you will find in most soda beverages.  It's a cheap sugar & made from GMO corn.

Pure Sugar/Sucrose: American formulas taste gross & they smell gross! In order to get infants to accept the taste, they add sugar or sugar like substances to sweeten it. This has been banned in Europe as it linked to a obesity issue in infants.  One study found that certain baby formulas contained up to 13.5g of sugar per serving.  To put that in preservative, there is 4g of sugar in one packet of sugar.  It is not required for companies to list the sugar content on their baby formulas.

Soy:  Soy has  been in recent years proven to alter hormone levels in babies by creating too much estrogen. Soy based formulas are extremely difficult to digest. Soybeans are inhibit the ability for the body to absorb nutrients.

Cupric Sulfate (copper sulfate): A herbicide, pesticide & fungicide.  It is also used to prevent growth of algae in pools & is considered a dangerous irritant to the environment.  It's used in formula as a drying property.  One study on adults exposed to copper sulfate experienced diarrhea, vomiting & abdominal pain.

Perchlorate: A chemical found in rocket fuel.  Used in 15 major brands. High levels of perchlorate (thousands of times higher than the doses estimated to result from consumption of infant formula or breast milk) affects the thyroid gland by blocking its ability to use iodine

Melamine: Used in plastics & adhesives.

Artificial DHA & ARA: Derived from fungus & algae.  Has proven to have  no effect on brain growth when synthetically made.  Cause's diarrhea

Carrageenan: A stabilizer or thickening agent, studies have proven inflammation in the intestines & colon cancer.  Found in most ready to feed milks. BANNED IN EUROPE

Besides the fact there are some frightening ingredients found in American formulas, there are far too many.  Your infant was designed to digest breastmilk, when thats not possible, formula is the next best thing.  Infant digestive systems are brand new & still figuring out this whole new world of digestion.  The formulas found in Europe are simple & limited in ingredients.  This makes them a million times easier to digest, thus less colic & gas pains.

Ingredients In European Formulas

Parents have voiced some concerns about what's in the European formulas.  We will talk about the ingredients used and why:

Maltodextrin:  Holle European baby formula contains small amounts of this in place of sucrose (sugar).  It also eliminates a good portion of lactose so that the formula is easier to digest.

Palm Oil: Mixed with other oils, it is in small amounts, needed for brain growth & development.  It has nutritional similarities to palmitic acid, a nutrient found in breast milk. Palm oil has a number of benefits as it contains vitamin E and beta-carotene.  Beta-carotene is connected with vision development.  Palm oil may also prevent vitamin A deficiency.  As a natural fat, it brings balance into the cardiovascular system with its combination of good cholesterol and bad cholesterol.  A diet with palm oil is a diet high in vitamin K.  This is good for bone health and helps blood coagulate.

Rapeseed Oil (Canola):  Omega-3 fatty acids are receiving more and more attention. In infancy, they are especially important for the normal development of brain and nerve cells. In the first 2 years of life, the brain grows unusually fast, so a regular intake of Omega-3 fatty acids is crucial.  One of the best vegetable sources of Omega-3 fatty acids is rapeseed oil. Rapeseed oil contains particularly high amounts of Omega-3 – ten times more than olive oil, for example. The favourable fatty acid structure of rapeseed oil is very effective in helping the body to process these essential Omega-3 fatty acids.

Soya Lecithin: This is not the same thing as found in soy based formulas.  It is used as a thickening agent.  Formulas in Europe do not use toxic solvents to extract.

Europe has been developing formulas for over decades.  With a strict food regulation in place in regards to nutrition & what should in the formula, Europe produces the best formulas on earth.

As many parents have soon to discover, the foods we consume here in the United States are less then healthy for us.  Independent food manufactures are taking back the industry with whole foods, less preservatives & less "stuff" in our foods.  We are slowly learning that our food system is corrupt and not in the best interest of Americans.

At Little Moo Organics, we go thru the difficult process of importing European baby formulas so you have the best options available for your infant.
